The Riviera model was debuted as Buick's entry into the personal luxury car market. Throughout its production, Buick produced 8 different generations of the Riviera. 1979 marked the first year for the sixth generation of the very popular luxury car and with it came a numbers of first's for the brand. 1979 was the first year that the Riviera was built on a front wheel drive platform (making it the first front wheel drive car to ever be produced by Buick) and it was the first year that forced induction, in the form of a turbocharger, was made available on the Buick Riviera.
